The Purpose of LIFE Small Groups

At Otterben, we want people to experience a taste of Biblical community by participating in an ongoing LIFE Small Group environment. We believe that small groups play a vital role in your spiritual growth, and we will do all we can to help find one that is right for you.

LIFE Small Groups help provide an environment where you can live out the seven qualities of a mature reproducing disciple of Jesus Christ.

  • Reflect Christ (you were created to be like Christ)
  • Fellowship with Believers (you were formed for God's family)
  • Live Biblically (you were given God's guidance for life)
  • Give Sacrificially (you were trusted with God's resources)
  • Serve Others (you were shaped for serving God)
  • Worship Daily (you were planned for God's pleasure)
  • Share Faith (you were made for a mission)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a LIFE Group?
A LIFE group is a predictable environment where individuals can experience a taste of biblical community. All LIFE groups are encouraged to study the bible, pray and fellowship together. They also become a place where caring relationships are developed, accountability, encouragement for spiritual growth, group ministry and service and worship can all take place. The majority of our LIFE groups consist of 12 people or less with a common affinity such as geographic location, life-stage, single, etc.

Why should I join?
At Otterbein we believe the best way to experience biblical community is within the context of a LIFE group. God has formed us for His family. We were created to be part of a relationship first with Him and then with others. The size of a LIFE group enables you to develop an authentic relationship with God and the members in your group. There is also great value in walking through life with other followers of Christ who care about you.

Are all LIFE Groups the same?
LIFE groups will vary slightly based on their affinity, leader’s personality and leadership style. We do, however, ask each group to have a time of Bible study, prayer and fellowship (not necessarily in that order). We also encourage leaders to create an environment where care, accountability, encouragement, ministry, service and worship can take place. When leaders follow this approach we believe that the members of each group will experience a taste of biblical community.

When and where do people meet?
LIFE Groups meet weekly or bi-weekly around the tri-state area in homes, at church, in restaurants and a number of other places—anywhere people feel comfortable to share!

Who leads a LIFE Group?
Each group has a trained leader/facilitator who is responsible to the church leadership for keeping the group on track.

What happens in a LIFE Group meeting?
You can expect to spend time studying and learning God’s Word, praying and sharing in the joys and challenges of life in a caring environment. You can ask questions, participate in discussion and hear others share insights and illustrations from their own experiences. Most groups have an informal time before or after their study which usually includes food and a fun time to get to know one another in a relaxed setting.

What about childcare?
Each group addresses their own needs.
