Isaiah 9:6 (ESV) (6) For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

The government will rest on his shoulders.

Jesus is King. Jesus rules. Every person, every power, every authority, and every knee will bow before Jesus (Philippians 2:9-11). Isaiah 9:6 introduces Jesus’ throne names. They are intended to describe the nature or the significance of the person named. But before Isaiah gives those names, he wants to make it crystal clear that Jesus is the only true King.

Isaiah expands on his thought in verse 7, His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity. The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen! The rule of King Jesus is characterized as one of peace, fairness, righteousness, and justice. And when the time comes, the armies of God will make this an eternal reality.

Jesus picked up this idea when the disciples asked Him how to pray. Jesus said, “May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.” (Matthew 6:10). One of the priorities of our prayers is that the rule of King Jesus would be realized in the heart of every person and that His rule would extend throughout the entire world.

Christmas is the perfect time to recognize the rule of Jesus. It is a great time to submit and ask Jesus to be the King of our life. Then, and only then, will we know, firsthand, His peace and righteousness.
