Isaiah 9:6 (ESV) (6) For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Jesus is the Wonderful Counselor.

Many years ago, I (Pastor Mark) stood at the top of a mountain in Colorado with a cheap film camera and attempted to take a picture. Sadly, my camera lens did not have the capacity to take in the scope of the scene, and refused to take the picture. My experience captures well the thought behind Jesus being a ‘wonderful counselor’.

Wonderful communicates the idea of being full of wonder, which is the natural response to something truly astounding, something that takes your breath away, something that renders us speechless. Jesus is wonderful, extraordinary, marvelous. His wonderfulness takes your breath away and renders you speechless. Or it should.

Isaiah connects the wonderfulness of Jesus to Him being a Counselor. This means He can make wise plans, give superior advice, and lead perfectly. Now put these thoughts together. The counsel of Jesus is good because the giver is wonderful. To seek the counsel of Christ is to seek Christ Himself. He gives wise advice. His wise advice, when obeyed, reveals His wonderfulness to us.

Take some time today to explore the unmatched wonderfulness of Jesus (expect the lens of your mind to be quickly overwhelmed). Now consider a situation or struggle you are facing. Seek out the Wonderful Counselor in prayer and ask Him for guidance and advice. In that moment, you will discover just how wonderful He is.
